Medical Information
As the name suggests, AMD (age-related macular degeneration) is caused by abnormal aging of the retina.
People affected by AMD are over 50 years old, making age the primary risk factor.
Other risk factors are also involved, particularly smoking.
AMD also appears to be more common in certain families and rare in others, suggesting a possible genetic component.
Finally, other risk factors have been identified, although with weaker and not yet fully confirmed associations, including high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, obesity, cataract, and a deficiency in antioxidant micronutrients.
