What is breast cancer?

Medical Information

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that develops in the breast. There are different types of breast cancer depending on the cells from which they originate. All women can be affected. In general, the risk increases with age, but it can also affect younger women. It is the most common cancer, affecting nearly 1 in 10 women. Breast cancer develops from the cells of the mammary gland.

There are two main categories:

  • Non-invasive cancer, also called in situ or ductal carcinoma in situ: cancer cells have not yet spread beyond the milk ducts.
  • Invasive cancer, also called infiltrating cancer: cancer cells may spread, usually through the lymph nodes in the armpit.
