Which vision defects can be treated surgically?

Health News, Medical Information

Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism—often occurring in combination—can be corrected using LASIK surgery.

The excimer laser works by reducing corneal thickness: centrally in myopic patients, and peripherally in hyperopic and astigmatic patients.

The limits of this procedure are directly related to corneal thickness, which is measured before surgery and must not be excessively reduced. Broadly speaking, the treatment ranges apply to more than 90% of patients:

  • – Myopia: from –1 to –10 diopters
  • – Hyperopia: from +1 to +5 diopters
  • – Astigmatism: from +1 to +5 diopters
