How can conjunctivitis be relieved?

Medical Information

The signs of conjunctivitis generally include a red eye, due to conjunctival hyperemia (dilation of blood vessels in the conjunctiva), which may appear more or less quickly. It is most often associated with a sensation of a foreign body, burning, or irritation.

In cases of acute allergic conjunctivitis triggered by contact with an allergen, in addition to redness, itching and conjunctival swelling are observed. These symptoms can appear suddenly.

There are infectious and non-infectious causes.
Among infectious causes, bacterial and viral conjunctivitis can be distinguished.

What treatments are available?
Artificial tears can be used in all types of conjunctivitis. They have a soothing effect by moisturizing the ocular surface.

Some treatments containing vasoconstrictor agents should be avoided, as they may cause a rebound effect (immediate whitening followed by secondary vasodilation, which worsens redness and local inflammation). If in doubt, seek advice from our practitioners.
