Hemorrhoids: is it always necessary to see a proctologist?

Medical Information

Hemorrhoids are flexible veins, like all other veins in the human body, located in the rectum and anus. Everyone has them naturally. They become painful when there is prolonged vein dilation, leading to what is known as a hemorrhoidal crisis (flare-up).

When should you consult a proctologist?

A proctologist is a medical specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the anus and rectum.

He or she is a specialist in gastroenterology and uses common medical examinations such as anoscopy or rectoscopy. Among the main conditions diagnosed by a proctologist are colorectal cancer, anal fissures, hemorrhoids, Crohn’s disease, and sexually transmitted infections.

It is important to note that among patients seen by proctologists, 10 to 15% of adults suffer from hemorrhoidal flare-ups.
