Foot lesions are frequent and serious complications in diabetic patients. They are linked to damage of the nerves and arteries of the lower limbs. They typically present as plantar neuropathic ulcers with ulceration and impaired healing capacity, which in severe cases may lead to amputation.
The International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) has defined four grades to assess podiatric risk.
Grade 0 corresponds to the absence of sensory neuropathy; Grade 1 to isolated sensory neuropathy; Grade 2 to sensory neuropathy associated with peripheral arterial disease of the lower limbs and/or foot deformity; and Grade 3 to a history of foot ulceration (Grade 3a) and/or lower limb amputation (Grade 3b).
