Before a surgical procedure under anesthesia, it is recommended to follow several essential instructions to ensure the safe conduct of anesthesia and surgery.
FASTING
- Do not eat for at least 6 hours before the procedure. Do not chew gum.
- CLEAR liquids (water, tea or sweetened coffee without milk, pulp-free fruit juice) may be consumed up to 2 hours before the procedure.
SMOKING
- Smoking increases the risk of surgical complications in all types of surgery.
- It increases the risk of infections, respiratory and cardiac complications, and the likelihood of being transferred to intensive care.
- Surgical complications increase the length of hospital stay for smokers.
