A surgical oncologist is a surgeon with experience in operating on cancerous growths in order to remove cancer from the body. They treat only cancers that form solid tumors in tissues, meaning they do not operate on blood cancers.
These are highly specialized surgeons who perform procedures such as biopsies, endoscopic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and reconstructive surgery.
If your primary care physician suspects that you may have cancer due to a mass in your body, they may refer you for a consultation with a surgical oncologist.
